Announcing the Winner of the 2020 Scholarship

Congratulations Cindy Chen of Columbia University

We are pleased to announce Cindy Chen as the winner of the 2020 Akkadian Labs Scholarship for $1,000. Candidates were asked to submit an essay detailing how information technology is used in their area of study and where they think their passion for technology may take them in the future. Cindy wrote a highly compelling essay on the social impacts of automation, where algorithms and predictive models, instead of people, could dictate decisions for the allocation of important social services. As a child of immigrants who often relied on such services, Cindy understands how automation could affect the lives of minorities, women, and low-income populations in America. As she begins to pursue her Master’s Degree in Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences (QMSS) at Columbia University, she will study applied statistics, computer science, mathematics, and quantitative public policy to develop her understanding of things like machine learning and artificial intelligence to develop collaboration technology that may help to consider, and eliminate the risk of bias. We were fascinated by her essay and inspired by her motivation to find ways that collaboration technology can work for the public good. We are honored to award our scholarship to her. Well done Cindy! Scholarship applications for the second half of 2020 are now open! Deadline is December 31st.
